Questions & Answers About Blackboard

1. What is Blackboard? Blackboard is a program used to construct course sites on the web.  All material is placed inside courses.  Blackboard allows announcements to be posted, holds documents, allows users to post comments on a bulletin board and conduct real-time chats. Students can send a document directly to the professor and have it returned to them.  Students  have access to a calendar and can even build their own web site inside the course. Blackboard contains an on-line testing facility which presents tests and provides the test taker with an immediate score.

2. How do I get Blackboard?  Blackboard is housed on a Linux server at D'Youville College (please do not confuse this site with the Blackboard Corporate site) and can be reached at: http://bb6.dyc.edu.  Once inside the Blackboard site, a visitor can look at some materials from some courses if allowed by the instructor.  Students of D'Youville College can request a user ID and Password for access to the course(s) they are taking.

3.  What training is available? Faculty, staff, and students are provided assistance with using Blackboard by the Department of Instructional Support Services/Distance Education (located in BFAC 004 and BFAC 006) which can be reached at 716-829-8147, or 8133. Students are given orientation courses at the beginning of the semester and faculty and staff can sign up for various in-service courses on Blackboard and other topics related to web courses.  Hardcopies of Blackboard directions are available through the Department of Distance Learning and each Blackboard course site contains built in documents for both faculty and students.

4. What system requirements do I need to use Blackboard? Students must possess a computer, be connected to the Internet, and have e-mail.  PC users should have a Pentium or equivalent with at least 64 mbs of RAM and Windows 95 or better. Macintosh users should have a Macintosh Power PC with 64 mb RAM and an OS of 7.5 or better.  For Internet browsers, it is recommended that PC users have Explorer 5.0 or better, or Netscape 4.7 or better, or Mozilla/Firefox 1.8 or better. Macintosh users should have the latest Netscape or Explorer versions for their computer.

5. How are students added to a Blackboard class?  Students must register in an Internet course or Internet assisted course. Then they should contact the Department of Distance Learning at 816-829-8147 or 8133, or e-mail the Director of Distance Learning at: murphy@dyc.edu.

6. What if I can't log on to Blackboard? If you are getting into the Blackboard site but are being denied access, first check to see if you are entering you user ID and password correctly. If this fails, contact the Department of Instructional Support at: 716-829-8147 or 8133.
