Distance
Education
|
|
Who we are...
|
|
Distance Education (or Distance
Learning - as some call it) at D'Youville
College is directed and supported by the
Department of Instructional Support
Services and Distance Education. Dr
John Murphy (716-829-8147) is the
Director; Mr. Thomas Milano (716-829-8133)
is the Coordinator of Distance
Education.
|
|
Where We Are...
|
|
We are located in BFAC 004 through BFAC
006 in the lower level of the
BauerAcademic Center.
|
|
What we use on the
Internet...
|
|
The department uses Blackboard
Course Info as management software to
support placement of course materials on
the web. Blackboard also supports private
discussion boards and chat rooms. An
optional course mangement system,
Moodle,
is undergoing beta testing this year (2007
-08). Moodle users can construct
discussion forums, chat rooms, and wikis.
Another chat room is available on the
hompage main menu on this site. The
department supports the construction of
individual web pages (which are viewable
by the public) on a server (DDL) separate
from Blackboard and includes a private
e-mail account with each website account.
A blog server, PROJECT, is also
available.
|
|
The main Distance Education server -
the New Blackboard - is at:
http://bb6.dyc.edu. Another
distance education server, Moodle,
currently being beta tested, is now
located at http://moodle.dyc.edu.
Content and sites are accessed via user
ID's and passwords obtained through the
Office of Instructional Support Services
located in BFAC 006. Contact Dr. J. Murphy
(716-829-8147 or murphyj@dyc.edu;
or Thomas Milano at 716-829-8133 or
milanot@dyc.edu.
|
|
A third Distance Education Server is
located at http://ddl.dyc.edu.
The main page (DDL) contains links to
Dept./Program
and Faculty/Staff/Student
web pages. DYC faculty and staff can have
a web page account in addition to a
Blackboard account. DYC students can also
have a web site for meeting academic
requirements or supporting DYC student
clubs or causes. The web site author will
need an account (ID & password) to
establish a folder and space on the server
for the html files. Students may also
obtain blog space on PROJECT, a server
running WordPress. Please see Dr. J.
Murphy (716-829-8147) or Tom Milano
(716-829-8133) for these services.

Getting a Blackboard Student User
Account...
|
|
All student
user account creation and maintenance
on the Blackboard server and other
distance education servers is centralized
through the department. Generally,
Blackboard student accounts are created
from course enrollment records passed to
us from the Registrar's Office. To get a
student
account on Blackboard: (1) enroll in
course with Registrar; (2) Complete
distance learning data
form supplied by Registrar and return
to Registrar's Office. Your
user ID is your student number; your
password is the last four digits of your
SSN or SIN. Contact Dr John Murphy
(716-829-8147) or Mr. Thomas Milano
(716-829-8133). Consult the Blackboard
Q & A page for more information on
Blackboard. Please note, a
user
account for the Blackboard
server is different from the general
D'Youville student computer account issued
through Academic
Computing Services located at
BFAC-8.

Getting a Faculty /Staff
Account...
|
|
Contact Dr John Murphy at: murphyj@dyc.edu
(716-829-8147) or Mr. Thomas Milano at:
milanot@dyc.edu
(716-829-8133).

Full/Partial Internet
Courses...
|
|
At the present time, only a minority of
the courses listed on Blackboard are full
Internet courses, that is, courses where
the classroom is entirely "virtual", the
students not coming to the college campus
for class. The majority of Blackboard
course sites support traditional classroom
courses, the course site acting as a
supplementary document reservoir and
discussion area. Please contact the
individual department chairs if you have
questions about which courses are true
distance learning sessions.
|
|
Inservice...
|
|
The department is responsible for the
in-service
training of faculty and staff on its
software. We also conduct in-service
classes for students and assist and
support distance education users on an
individual basis.
|
|
